Field of Angels coming to Calera

A baseball league for special needs children will soon begin its inaugural season in Calera.

The Field of Angels Baseball League, with opening day set for Aug. 7, is designed to allow special needs children to compete for fun and for the community to come together in support.

Founder Chris Bunn, who's 10-year-old son Noah has special needs, wanted his child as well as others in Calera to have the same athletic opportunity as kids in other communities.

"We want to create an event that can tie the whole community together, where they can cheer for these kids; most of the kids have never had that, " Bunn said.

The league was founded after Bunn tried for a year to contact the Miracle League, a national handicapped baseball program, with no success.

"We tried to get in touch with the Miracle League, but then we just put together bits and pieces from other leagues to form our own," Bunn said.

At present, Bunn is anticipating four teams to compete in the league.

"We want to provide a community event with something for everyone," Bunn said.

The season begins Aug. 7 at 9 a.m. at Oliver Park in Calera.
