Employee Benefits
:  Starting salary for a Calera Police Officer is $16.50 per hour.  APOST applicants will start at a pay rate of $17.04 per hour. Employees receive 88 hours of Holiday a year, 96 hours of Sick Time and after one year of employment, they receive 40 hours of Vacation. We offer State Retirement and supplemental programs such as Valic and the State RSA-1 Deferred Compensation Program.  The City pays 100 % of individual health benefits, employees pay approximately $105.00 a month for family benefits.  Employees receive a life insurance policy of $10,000.00 from the City, in addition to any State and Federal benefits. We supply all uniforms and equipment except a handgun and duty belt.  Employees who retire with the City of Calera receive 100% of their individual health insurance premiums paid for life!

Department Profile:   The Calera Police Department has twenty-seven sworn officer positions. Our agency's staffing consists of one Chief of Police, one Deputy Chief of Police, one Lieutenant, four Sergeants, three Corporals, seventeen officers, one Victim Services Officer, one Jailer, five Communications Officers and one Records Clerk.  Several of our officers participate in the Explorer Post, Calera Dive and Rescue Unit, hostage negotiations, Haz-mat/Clandestine Lab Specialist, Firearm Instructors, Radar Instruction, Traffic Fatality Unit, Animal Control/Abuse Investigations, Domestic Violence and Victim Services. We qualify with firearms a minimum of four times a year, in addition to tactical firearms training courses such as simunitions and FATS. 

 

Police Officer Applicant Requirements:   Applicants must be 21 years or older, possess a high school diploma or equivalent from an accredited school, and pass a minimal background screening of their traffic, criminal, and civil background to qualify for consideration of the first phase, the fitness screening.  Applicants must complete a 1.5 mile run in 15:00, 27 push-ups in one minute and 27 sit-ups in one minute. Applicants who pass this test will be invited back for a written exam.  Applicants who achieve an 80 % or above score will be considered for a review board, comprised of veteran Calera Police Officers and Spvrs.  The Review Board selects the three best applicants for each opening (if two openings, six will be selected) for a final interview with the Chief of Police. Applicants may only take the test once a year and only after they have passed the physical fitness requirements. Those applicants that are current APOST certified are exempt from the physical and written test.
