 If You Smell Gas

Natural gas is colorless and odorless. A chemical that smells like rotten eggs is added so you can smell a leak immediately. Teach everyone in your family to recognize the smell of a natural gas leak. If you think you smell gas, leave it to a qualified City of Calera Natural Gas operator to find the leak for you. Leave your home immediately. Do not turn off / on any electrical appliances, including light switches.

Make the call from a neighbor’s house or a cell phone outside of your residence away from the smell of gas.

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless gas produced when any fossil fuel (gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil, coal, propane, natural gas, etc) is used improperly and burns without sufficient oxygen. CO poisoning causes flu-like symptoms and in rare cases, death. If you think you are experiencing any of the symptoms of CO poisoning, get fresh air immediately. Open windows and doors for more ventilation, turn off any combustion appliances, and leave the house. Call your fire department and report your symptoms.

CO poisoning can be prevented through proper appliance installation, maintenance and use. Additionally, CO detectors should be installed on every floor in your home.
