    Q.  What can I do about animal complaints?
    A.  The City of Calera has a "Leash Law" which pertains to dogs only.  The City ordinance allows only two licensed dogs per household (legitimate hunting dogs are exempt). Complaints regarding cats are not covered by City ordinance, unless the complaint involves a safety issue. The City of Calera does not currently have an Animal Control Officer however we respond to all complaints within the City limits.  If you do not live in the Calera City limits, you may contact the Shelby County Animal Control at 669-8766.  If you live within the City limits of Calera and are bothered by barking dogs or dogs roaming the neighborhoods, you can call the police department at 668-3505 (24 hrs a day). Dogs not tethered (on a leash) may be picked up and taken to the Shelby County Humane Society in Columbiana. In most cases however, the owner of the dog is given a warning.  After the first warning, the owner may be fined if the person witnessing the violation is willing to sign a complaint.  When a dog is picked up, every attempt is made to contact the owner.  If your dog is missing and you believe it was picked up, please call the Calera Police Department.
