Here are a few tips that may help prevent someone from being taken advantage of.  Please remember though that there are a lot of very good, reputable individuals who do a very good job.  If you're ever suspicious, call the Calera City Hall or Calera Police Department to verify their business; honest professional businesses will encourage you to do so!

  • ask for local references
  • ask to see a copy of the City business license, if the work is to be done within the Calera City limits or jurisdiction.  All businesses must have a Calera City license on site (without exception).  If they don't have one or claim they "just don't have it with them, call the Calera City Hall to verify (668-3500).  Be aware that door to door solicitation is illegal within the City of Calera
  • good businesses usually don't need "money up front", to do the job.  Its not your job to show trust in these situations, that's their job.
  • agree on a price and service before they start the work
  • avoid paying cash
  • the old adage "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

 Beware of Scams

  • "Hi, were calling to see if you will be willing to make a donation to your local police and fire service?  We can come by and pick up a check for your convenience  . . ."     The Calera Police and Fire service welcome donations, however any programs sponsored by the City will be published on the website or at City Hall. Call the organization  before you donate and NEVER donate over the phone nor with a credit card!  Be sure of whom you are giving your money to.

  • "I just found out my son was in an auto accident and I need to get to the hospital but I have no gas money, can you loan me $20.00?"   These cases can be resolved very easily by calling your local police department to verify.  If what they are saying is true, the local police may be able to assist in getting the matter resolved.
