Departmental Profile
The Calera Police Department has thirty-two sworn officers, five full-time dispatchers, two part-time dispatchers, one jailer, one records clerk and one victim services officer.

Shift Scheduling

  • Patrol officers work 43-hour work weeks, 8.6 hours per day for a five day work week.
  • Dispatchers work four, ten hour shifts per week, for a four day work week.
  • All employees could work non-standard hours, holidays and weekends.
  • Officers usually pick shifts based on seniority.  Officers work three shifts:

1st Shift   5:24am-2pm
2nd Shift  1:24pm-10pm
3rd Shift   9:24pm-6am

  • Starting salary for full-time dispatch position is $29,744 per year
  • Starting salary for Non-APOST certified officers is $39,331.24 per year

Assigned Equipment
Patrol car loaded with some of the newest technology, digital in-car camera, docking station and mobile data computer.

Class A and B uniform's parade coat and hat, boots, rain gear, training wear, toboggan, ball cap, jacket, traffic vest, bullet proof vest, portable radio, aerosol spray, Glock 22 or 23 handgun, AR15 or M4 rifle, ruggedized laptop, duty belt, handcuffs and flashlight. 

Application Process

A physical fitness test and written test will be given to all Non-APOST certified applicants. These tests are to ensure that the applicant can pass the entry tests and ongoing tests in the police academy, should the applicant be hired

APOST Certified Officer Applicants are exempt from testing. APOST applicants should download the application and turn it in to the dispatch window in the police department or mail it to; Calera Police Department, 10947 Hwy 25, Calera AL 35040. The applications will be reviewed for completeness and screened for acceptable standards. The acceptable applicants will be notified when positions come available and will be invited to the interview board.  If the interview board recommends the applicant for employment the applicant will be invited to an interview with the Chief of Police.  If the applicant is being considered for employment by the Chief of Police the applicant will be required to successfully pass a background investigation, physical, drug test, polygraph and psychological evaluation.  After the applicant is hired as a probationary officer, the officer will be assigned to the department’s Field Training Officer Program for eight-weeks. After the successful completion of the FTO program the officer will be assigned to an open patrol shift.

Non APOST Certified Officer Applicants should download the application and turn it in to the dispatch window in the police department or mail it to; Calera Police Department, 10947 Hwy 25, Calera AL 35040. The applications will be reviewed for completeness and screened for acceptable standards. The acceptable applicants will be notified when positions become available and testing dates have been scheduled. Applicants will be invited to take a physical fitness test. If the applicant passes the physical fitness test they will be invited back to take a written test. After successfully passing both tests the applicant will be invited back to the interview board. A background investigation will be completed followed by a second interview.  If the interview board recommends the applicant for employment, the applicant will be invited to an interview with the Chief of Police. If the applicant is being considered for employment by the Chief of Police, the applicant will be required to successfully pass a background investigation, physical, drug test, polygraph and psychological evaluation. Once hired as a probationary police officer, the officer will be scheduled to attend a fourteen-week police academy. After the successful completion of the police academy the officer will be scheduled and assigned to the department’s Field Training Officer Program for ten-weeks.  After the successful completion of the FTO program the officer will be assigned to an open patrol shift.
