Municipal Court has jurisdiction over motor vehicle and traffic violations, criminal misdemeanors and municipal ordinance violations established by the Code of Ordinances and committed within the city limits of Calera, Alabama.

Court Dates:
  • 1st Thursday of Each Month
  • 2nd Thursday of Each Month
  • 3rd Thursday of Each Month
These dates can change due to unforeseen circumstances, however Court is always
held on Thursday, 1:30 P.M.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAYING FINES
If the Defendant wishes to enter a plea of guilty, certain charges may be paid without appearing in court. To obtain the amount of these fines and other information regarding a citation, contact the Magistrate’s office. Please wait 48 hours after receiving a citation before calling for information.

After the fine amount has been established, you may pay in person, mail, or by phone no later than the court date shown on the citation. Payment tender accepted: cash, money order, cashier’s check, MasterCard, Visa. NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED

To pay a fine by mail, the defendant should sign the Plea of Guilty/Waiver of Rights set forth on the citation, and mail it with payment.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING SCHOOL
Defendants with a clean driving record have the opportunity to keep a good record by attending a defensive driving course. To determine if you meet requirements to apply for driving school, contact the Magistrate’s office. Further information regarding the driving school may be obtained by contacting (205) 668-3805 or (205) 668-3801. The cost for attending Driving School is $125.00 due before court date.

Some Citations/cases cannot be paid without court appearance. The offenses that can be paid are listed on your ticket. If you have been convicted of more than two violations during the preceding 12 months, State Law requires you to appear in court.


If Defendant wants to plead Not Guilty and take a case to trial, they must appear in person on the court date and time shown on the citation.

INTERPRETER SERVICES
A Spanish interpreter is available at every court session.

IF THE CITATION/CASE IS NOT PAID BEFORE YOUR COURT DATE OR YOU DO NOT APPEAR IN COURT, A WARRANT OF ARREST WILL BE ISSUED AND YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE WILL BE SUSPENDED.

Procedures to have a warrant issued:
File a report with the police department.
Obtain a copy of the report.
Take the police report to the magistrate.
Upon arrival at magistrate’s office, you will file a deposition.

Some important points to remember:
If there is probable cause, a warrant or summons will be issued.
The Magistrate has to determine there is sufficient evidence to merit probable cause. A warrant cannot be issued without sufficient evidence.
ONCE A WARRANT IS ISSUED IT CANNOT BE DROPPED OR CANCELLED!
